Rainy day sailing

Rainy day sailing
2018-09-27

Although we all hope to leave drizzly weather behind us while on a sailing holiday, when the view is not quite what was in the brochure and the rain is pelting down, all is not lost. Here are a few ideas for how to entertain yourself and your crew on those damp days.

Sailing in the Rain

One option is to go sailing.  Being at sea in the rain can be a unique experience, but   remember that there will be low visibility, possibly choppy water and the chance that the weather might build up into a storm so an experienced skipper is needed. It is always better to be on land wishing you were out at sea than at sea wishing you were back on land.

Take a Nap Onboard

There is nothing like the pitter patter of rain on the deck and the movement of the boat to lull you into a restful sleep. Since sailing holidays are usually made up of active days and late nights, it is a chance to catch some z’s . An afternoon sleep is a luxury most don’t have these days, so take advantage of the soggy weather!

Watch a Movie

It’s always a good idea to have some movies with you for just these a occasions…and why not with a nautical theme ? Have a look at our list of Best Sailing Movies to give you some ideas. Bring out the crisps and hunker down below deck for a cozy movie marathon.

Explore the Harbour

Depending on where you are there may be museums art galleries and the like to take in a bit of culture indoors where it is nice and dry. Alternatively, visit little shops and local taverns where you can sample the local fare, taste the wine and while away the hours that you can’t be out on the water.

Read a Book

It’s time to catch up on the reading! You know those books you bought in the trip with you that have remained unopened? Now is your chance to lose yourself in one of them for a day or two.

Play Some Games

A pack of cards or an easily packable board game is great for those moments when the weather is wet and moody. Get your crew together for a game of Gin Rummy, Blackjack, Poker or Bridge.  Of course electronic devices are also a good option on a rainy day and all sorts of ideas for fun and games can be easily found.

Clean up the Boat Charter

A rainy day is a great excuse to re-organize the boat charter, have a good tidy up and make some supply lists. With a little elbow grease and teamwork the sailboat will be gleaming in no time.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunts are much fun for kids and adults alike. Create a list of things to be found in and around the boat and harbour with a nautical theme and send everyone out (in their waterproof gear) for a Scavenger Hunt. Scavenger Hunts can also be about collecting photos. Create your own list, adapted to the place you are anchored.

Here are five ideas to start you off. 1. Piece of rope;  2. Something blue;   3. Something that belongs in the sea;   4. Something that doesn’t belong in the sea, but is there anyway;  5. A photo of a local, and so on.

With these activities in mind gloomy weather days will be plain sailing, albeit of a different sort. It’s a chance to do something unexpected on your sailing holiday until the clouds make way for the sun, the wind picks up and it’s time to set sail again.
